At this past weekend’s ONA's Online Journalism Awards in LA I accepted the inaugural James W. Foley award for conflict freelancers. I cannot fully express my gratitude for this incredible honor and am deeply humbled. This award is a testament not just to freelance conflict reporting, but to the legacy James left behind. The award also carries with it the weight of one of the greatest human failings in recent memory; the Syrian war. The struggle of the Syrian people is what James lost his life for. To show the world the cruelty and suffering experienced every day by people trapped in and fleeing this conflict.
For a freelancer journalist, specifically one that has covered the war in Syria, I cannot think of a higher honor than this. I’m incredibly grateful.
