Young boys playing volleyball in a village on the outskirts of Bagram, Afghanistan. Everywhere you go in the world you’ll find kids playing with each other - from Syrian refugee camps to the alleys of Chicago. Its a reoccurring theme here on this feed because it’s also something I always stop and shoot when working a location. Kids being kids and enjoying life despite whatever might be going on around them. #afghanistan

Nazmeena, 18, poses for a portrait at a family friend's house in Kunar district, Afghanistan. Her leg was badly damaged by a rocket attack five years ago which resulted in it being shorter than the other leg. Nazmeena received a boot riser and rehabilitation from the local UNMAS funded clinic which have helped her regain much of the mobility lost in due to the injury. A gallery containing some of this work opened this week at the United Nations and will be in New York for a month before traveling to Geneva. #minefree #imad2018 @un_mineaction

Mohammad Ishaq, 28, works at a physical rehabilitation center funded by UNMAS in Kunar district, Afghanistan. Mohammad's right hand was injured by a missile attacks years ago. He’s been working at the clinic since 2011 where he builds prosthetics for patients who have lost limbs. The clinic is the only like it in the area and many patients I spoke with traveled hours to reach it. This afternoon at 6 PM EST I’ll be discussing some of the work @un_mineaction is doing in Iraq and Afghanistan at the opening of the exhibit for Mine Awareness and Assistance in Mine at the UN in New York. The gallery containing some of this work opens tonight and will be in New York where for a month before traveling to Geneva. #minefree #imad2018 @un_mineaction

Bakhtmina Asafi, 23, runs a mine risk education class funded by UNMAS on the outskirts of Jalalabad, Afghanistan on December 18, 2017. Bakhtmina is originally from Nangahar province and has been running classes since 2014 along with her brother. She says she does this job because of how severe the mine problem is in Afghanistan. The class I watched her teach, Bakhtmina taught children how to identify different types of explosive hazards they might come across. Children are often victims of explosives in post-conflict areas as items like cluster munitions and grenades look like toys to be picked up played with. This afternoon at 1:30 PM EST I’ll be discussing some of the work @un_mineaction is doing in Iraq and Afghanistan live from their Facebook page. UNMAS projects are often designed to focus on both physical mine clearance and civilian rehabilitation and preventative efforts. A gallery containing some of this work opens tomorrow at the UN in New York where it will be for a month before traveling to Geneva.

Despite the military victories by Iraqi forces over ISIS in Mosul and Hawija last year, the militant group has survived. Earlier this month they released gruesome videos showing attacks on a civilian bus and the execution of Iraqi officers. While the attacks shown in the videos are limited in scope, there have been consistent reports of checkpoints being attacked, targeted killings, and IEDs over the last few months. There is growing concern among the civilian population I speak with that ISIS is coming back. That many of them hid in the shadows during the fighting and have returned to operating as normal. Last year as newly retaken territory was being cleared by security forces like the NSS team pictured here, people said the militants were still among them. There were rumors that even if caught, ISIS members just bribed their way out. This past month conversations were much of the same and people are scared. Families said they knew ISIS members living on their block that no one would deal with. Others said they knew where members lived that had bribed their way out. Even before all the dead have been buried, it seems further violence is brewing just under the surface. This images is from a raid on suspected ISIS members hiding in neighborhoods of east Mosul, Iraq in February 2017.
